The paper noted that director Franco Zeffirelli’s 16-year-old heroine still spoke Shakespeare with a Spanish lilt. As a child, Hussey – birth name Osuna – left Buenos Aires for London with her mother and brother, unaware that she wouldn’t see her father again until she became so famous that the Argentinean government flew her home to hug her grandmother on live TV.

Fame hadn’t taken long to arrive. As Hussey recounts in her lively new autobiography, The Girl on the Balcony, a year after the trio arrived in the UK, she turned to her mother and announced: “I think it’s time I started taking my career seriously.” She was eight.

  I have a problem with Romeo and Juliet adaptations (and anything that takes inspiration from it). Absolutely none of the ones I've seen seem to truly get the Bard's famous play. See, Romeo and Juliet is by no means an original work. It's actually a 'remake' of an old Italian tale that was adapted in literary form for the English around Shakespeare's time, and Shakes took to making his own version of it.

  So what did Shakespeare do to change it up? Two things. He expanded the plot and further developed supporting characters, namely Mercutio (and this is important). Second, he made it a comedy.

  This is special. First off, today (06-Oct-17) is my 66th birthday, which according to U.S. Social Security is the 'full retirement' age for people born, like me, in 1951. By definition, I am now officially 'old.' Hooray.

• i remember not understanding a single word from the play when i read it in 10th grade, and i feel the same while watching this movie. like literally i didn’t understand half of what they were sayingfjdj😭😭

  but yeah this isn’t very good and honestly shouldn’t be referred to as “the greatest romance of all time”. the “Before Trilogy” says hello!!!

  Perhaps one of the most exciting Shakespeare adaptations to date and certainly the definitive cinematic adaptation of the play upon both leads providing solid performances (mainly from Zac Efron) and keeping the eternal take on love and revenge throughout its short comings. Better yet for fans of the source material, Romeo and Juliet underlines the beauty of the tragedy with appealing, lingering moments to appreciate whenever they come and go. Just got to love seeing nudity with your 9th grade English class!

• Neither epic nor intimate, Romeo and Juliet feels more like a fan made version of the play than the thing itself.

  A too faithful adaptation that defeats its own purpose. It is so faithful that it is practically a filmed version of the play. There are some directorial flourishes, but they are few and far between; not enough to warrant a filmed adaptation.

  Material that was embellished comes across as pitifully embarrassing, and the rest is rote recitation.

  The two nice touches for me are Laurence Oliviers sumptuous narration (of which there is far too little), and Nino Rota’s sweet, sweet score. That score alone merits 1.5 stars.

  Overall just a dull adaptation that shouldn’t have been made. I much prefer the Baz Lurhmann version, because it is extravagant, crazy, and full of energy: three things this film is not.

• Proper old school and, obviously difficult not to see as inferior to Luhrman's masterpiece. But this is what it is and it does it classically. A solid adaptation.
